Sunflowers, or Hvshushi (meaning “little suns” in old Chahta anumpa), were a significant part of our agriculture. They were often grown among the corn, beans, gourds, and even watermelons our ancestors cultivated. Naia Waiya, a sacred place in Choctaw culture, holds deep meaning as the heart of our creation. A place we rested and became the first Chahta.
Between our sacred creation story and our agricultural history, I found inspiration for “Hattak Ti̱kba” (Fore Ancestor). The name being suggested by a friend more fluent than me, but just as powerful. It is a small tribute, scented with sunflowers—soft and simple—yet rich in meaning. Bringing these stories together makes sense to me, and I hope it resonates with you too. 🌻
